When her mother passed away at a young age, her family urged her to discontinue her studies. However, Ummul refused to give up and persisted with her hard work. Today, she has achieved her dream of becoming an IAS officer.

Later, she graduated in Psychology from Gargi College, Delhi, and pursued her MA and MPhil from the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. After completing her MPhil, Ummul qualified for JRF in 2013, which entitled her to a scholarship of Rs. 25,000 per month.
